We all know that Thursday has been the new Friday for years now, so there's no reason to put off until Friday what you can absolutely do on Thursday. Enter the return of Twilight at the Club, a Thursday night party at Griffith Park where cool local bands play, drinks and food abound and people willingly dress up like Carlston from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."
Continue ReadingHold your horses! Even though I'm opposed to horse racing, it's hard for me to resist the creativity and absurdity on full display every year at the Kentucky Derby. And now a taste of all that unbridled Southern pageantry is hitting LA on Saturday, May 5, so grab your hat and get ready to raise a Mint Julep or two.
Continue ReadingCinco de Mayo is on a Saturday this year, which means one thing: This party is gonna get muuuuuy LOCO! Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unexpected victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. But here in the states it's really just an excuse to drink and eat with wild abandon. So here's to Cinco de Mayo, amigos! Find out where to toast our Mexican brothers and sisters in Los Angeles and beyond.
Continue ReadingArriba, arriba! National Margarita Day and National Tortilla Chip Day have come and gone (February 22 and 24, respectively), but let's face it--those fauxlidays were just there to keep us going until Cinco de Mayo. And now that May 5 (aka everyone's favorite excuse to consume an excessive amount of margaritas and tortilla chips) is just around the corner, it's the perfect time to find out where to indulge around town. Read on for some of my favorites spots to get the tasty power couple.

Vinyl is making a serious comeback with worldwide record-breaking sales (like that?) and more indie-owned shops opening up, including more than a few here in Los Angeles. Adding to the trend is Record Store Day, the worldwide event supporting mom & pop record shops, taking place on April 21 with special deals and the like. Check out this list of LA record stores to celebrate the vinyl revival.

Setting up shop on a school playground every second Saturday of the month, this Eastside hub is loaded with collectibles, art, crafts, vintage anything, books, power tools, housewares, jewelry and yes, lots of locals in fluorescent shades and shaggy haircuts. Oh, and don't forget the free ping pong.

(In fact, my 15-year-old cousin died from it years ago.) The good news is that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society has invested more than $184 million to help patients and their families and now you have a chance to help--and have a good time doing it. The LLS Gala is going on Saturday, April 28 and it promises to be a night of celebration and hope with lots of entertainment, dinner, drinks and dancing.
Continue ReadingOh, Tax Day. That dreaded time of year when everyone's least avuncular Uncle Sam comes to cash in at our expense. Or, if you're one of the fortunate few, it's the one day when you get a little cash back to help ease the sting of all those taxes being taken from your paycheck the rest of the year. Either way, we could all use a good deal right about this time. And even better, a freebie. Here's a quick hit list of discounts (some offered specifically for the occasion and others that are just plain good) that will help add a little relief to your 2012 tax season.

What if you could ride like the wind or walk the streets without nary a worry about some completely unnecessary Range Rover cutting you off? Well, your moment has arrived. For one glorious afternoon on Saturday, April 15, the streets of Downtown LA and its surrounding areas will be free of cars and alive with the sound of ... no traffic!
Continue ReadingDon’t call it a comeback; it’s been here for years. So whether you’re looking to emulate Rimbaud, Wilde, Van Gogh and Hemingway or you just want to get your drink on, here are a few places in LA where you can raise a glass o' green.
