If “Slumdog Millionaire” had a dance-off with “Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk” it might look a little something like India Jazz Suites, a rhythmically charged collaboration between one of India’s most famed dancers and one of the world’s fastest tap dancers. Presented by the Carpenter Performing Arts Center in Long Beach, the show features Chitresh Das, India’s foremost Kathak dance master, and Emmy-winning tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith, in a dynamic back-and-forth where each artist rock his own style of rhythm, improvisation and movement.
Ranging from slow-building movement to complex footwork at incredible speeds, the show also includes spoken-word-dance, live musicians (think sitar, piano, guitar, tabla, jazz drums) and plenty of other stuff you’ve probably never seen. India Jazz Suites has become a sensation since it first premiered in San Francisco in 2005. The Long Beach performances mark the launch of its seventh tour across 11 cities in the United States and Canada.
