Out & About: Boyle Heights

2 Comments 13 April 2013

There aren't any hot new restaurants or trendy shops cropping up along East First Street in Boyle Heights at the moment, and as far as gentrification ... ¿que es eso? But that's exactly the sort of no-fuss, authentic vibe that makes this stretch east of Downtown LA so appealing. Here are some of my favorite spots along this historic street.

Late-Night, All-Night Happy Hour

3 Comments 21 January 2013

Happy Hour. Two little words that bring such joy to so many. But who can get out of the office at four-frickin-thirty in the afternoon? Thankfully, restaurants and bars are figuring out that if they really want to entice all of us they're gonna have to come up with something beyond the typical happy hour window when everyone’s 1) still at work 2) stuck in traffic or 3) not ready to get drunk quite yet. So I give you this list of late-night happy hours offering a good time at a reasonable price and reasonable hour. (Bonus: Most include food specials, too.)

Din Tai Fung is Oh So Fun

1 Comment 06 January 2013

So the other day my fiance and I decided we wanted to get away from the Westside for just a little bit and go somewhere to eat. Somewhere that would be worth drive. Downtown LA? Nah, there all the time. Silver Lake? Uh, don't think I can take seeing another skinny guy in skinny jeans so early in the morning. Need somewhere farther. That's when Din Tai Fung popped into my head. It was time to embark on the 45-minute drive to Arcadia.

32 Comments 22 December 2012

In case you hadn't noticed, gluten-free dining is on the rise. Hardly a food fad, a gluten-free diet is a lifestyle that, if not managed, can result in serious health consequences. That's because gluten is a substance present in many foods and cereal grains like wheat, and a growing number of people are realizing that they have an allergy to it. So what's a gluten-free gourmand to do? Surrender to a life of boring steamed vegetables and a few pieces of fruit? Not even close.

Best Pizza in Los Angeles

8 Comments 28 November 2011

The best pizza in LA? Ask someone where to find the best pizza in LA and the answers are so passionate, so philosophical, so varied you'd think you were asking about the very meaning of life. Pizza purists might say the best pizza can only be found at a pie-only joint that devotes its entire kitchen to the creation of the doughy cheesy stuff. In which case, purist I am not. That's because it is my strong opinion that some of the best pizza, at least in Los Angeles, is found at restaurants that just so happen to do great 'za. Here are just 5 places where I have found my own version of the best pizza in Los Angeles.
