The countdown to the Grilled Cheese Invitational is on. The big event happens Saturday, April 23 at Los Angeles Center Studios and if last year’s blowout is any indication of how this year’s will fare, it’s going to be out of control! To prepare, event sponsor Tillamook Cheese has partnered with six Los Angeles and Orange County restaurants that are offering their own grilled cheese melts. Tillamook Grilled Cheese Week runs from April 16-23, so read on to plot out your grilled cheese crawl. (As for the melt in the photo, that’s the Grilled Cheese Truck’s infamous Cheesy Mac & Rib.) Happy eating!
Simplethings Sandwich & Pie Shop – 8310 W 3rd Street, Los Angeles 90048
This cute little retro shop is where you can pig out on chef Carrie Cusack’s Pork Belly Grilled Cheese with Tillamook Monterey Jack Cheese, pork belly, smoked tomato, caramelized onions and avocado for $9.50.
Dominick’s – 8715 Beverly Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90048
Ramp up your grilled cheese game at this WeHo favorite (I love Dominick’s brunch!) where chef Brandon Boudet has created a sandwich featuring Tillamook Monterey Jack Grilled Cheese, grilled ramps (aka wild leeks) and ciabatta bread for $11.
Oaks Gourmet – 1915 N Bronson Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90068
This cozy and cool marketplace is where Grilled Cheese Invitational participant and chef Luke Reyes is offering a sandwich made with Tillamook Sharp Cheddar, black forest bacon, and homemade tomato jam on sourdough bread for $9.95.
The Foundry – 7465 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Grilled Cheese Invitational veteran and all around cheesy chef Eric Greenspan will melt your mouth with the Johnny Apple Cheese (aka Johnny Pastrami) with Tillamook Sharp Cheddar, sourdough, apple mustard chutney, green apple and smoked pastrami for $8.
101 Coffee Shop – 6145 Franklin Ave, Hollywood, CA 90028
Chef Brandon Boudet sure does get around. In addition to the melt he created for Dominick’s, he’s concocted a cheesy po’ boy at this old-school diner made with Tillamook Medium Cheddar and homemade Creole hot sausage for $9.
Crow Bar & Kitchen – 2325 East Coast Highway, Corona Del Mar, CA 92625
This Orange County gastropub is where chef John Cuevas is offering a melt that sounds like a winner. (Mario Batali evidently loves this place.) The smoky $11 creation is made with Tillamook Sharp Cheddar, pickled ramps, smoked bacon, garlic mayo and a fried egg.
