Hostess With the Mostess: Twinkies in LA

Holy Wonder Bread! In case you hadn’t heard, Hostess is closing up shop. Evidently, the (in)famous baker and maker of such time-honored, heart-palpitating treats as Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Hostess cupcakes, Ho-Hos and Wonder Bread is in bad health with more debt than they can chew. So what’s a commercial-grade, highly processed food-loving fiend with a yen for nostalgia supposed to do? Here are a handful of places around LA where you can still get your Twinkie and Hostess cupcake fix. At least for now.

Twinkie Boy @ Go Burger
This place, famous for its endless burger options and spiked milkshakes, is where to get the Twinkie Boy, a deliciously aggressive twist on the cream-filled bun. Served in a tall chilled glass, the shake is made with vanilla ice cream, pulverized Twinkies and caramel syrup. It’s a lactose intolerant’s nightmare, but totally worth the bloat.

Deep Fried Twinkies @ One Eyed Gypsy
This cool carnie-inspired Downtown LA bar might be the only place outside the county fair where you can get a deep-fried Twinkie, game of Skeeball and booze of your choice all at once, so step right up before it’s too late.

Homemade Hostess Cupcake @ Simon LA & LA Market
The name says it all. Chef Kerry Simon’s outrageous Junk Food Platter at Simon LA and LA Market is the ultimate sugar high with all sorts of homemade twists on nostalgic sweets ranging from cotton candy and caramel corn to yummy Hostess cupcakes.

Twinker Bell @ Burger Monster
The truck formerly known as the OC Food Truck is now the Burger Monster, but one thing that hasn’t changed is the famed Twinker Bell. The deep-fried Twinkie covered in Nutella, powdered sugar, whipped cream and fresh raspberry compote is over the top and was also the winner of the Chowdown Dessert Contest at the OC Fair last year.

Twinkie A La Mode @ Alondra Hot Wings
This SoCal mini-chain is a hotbed of cheap eats like pizza, pasta, hot wings and fried everything, so you may as well go for broke and finish yourself off with their Twinkie A La Mode, a deep-fried Twinkie that’s served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Hot damn.
