Oscar Parties For Regular People

2 Comments 19 February 2013

Didn’t get the invite to all those fancy Oscar parties going on around town? So what. Just because you haven’t made the A-list (yet) doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a little glitz and glam on Hollywood’s biggest night. Whether you want to toast the Oscars with a bunch of hobbits or feel like living out your own A-list fantasy by strutting the red carpet, check out these fun Academy Awards celebrations for all the little people.

Hollywood Roosevelt - www.publickitchenandbar.com
Where better to enjoy the Oscars than at the site of the very first Academy Awards ceremony in 1929? The legendary Hollywood Roosevelt will host a viewing dinner and party starting at 5pm on Oscar Sunday with a three-course menu for $99. The event will be shown on big plasma screens around the main dining room, which will be transformed into a viewing lounge. An a la carte menu is also available in the main lobby area where the ceremony will be screened on a 15-foot display. Call 323-769-8888 to make a reservation.

APLA Party @ The Abbey -  www.apla.org/oscars
AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) is holding its 12th Annual Oscar Viewing Party at the Abbey, hosted by Becca Tobin from “Glee” and Pauley Perrette of “NCIS.” Yes, it’s a pricey affair (tix start at $500), but it goes to a great cause and the night includes dinner, drinks and black-tie fun. APLA is also having a much more casual (translation = cheaper) Oscar viewing party right next door at Here Lounge. The event promises no tuxes, lots of cocktails and gays everywhere! More info can be found at www.apla.org/redcarpetriot

Catch @ Casa Del Mar – www.hotelcasadelmar.com
If you’re gonna watch the Oscars, you may as well do it by the beach. Hotel Casa del Mar will host a live viewing party on Sunday from 4pm to 9pm. Cocktails, delicious food from the new Lobby Lounge menu and complimentary popcorn will be served during the show and photographers will be onsite to take your photo on the red carpet. You’ll also get to enjoy a trivia contest where the person who has the most correct predictions of Oscar winners will win dinner for two at Catch Restaurant. For more information on the Oscar Night Party, contact Simon Sorpresi at 310.581.7724.

The One Expected Partywww.theonering.net/one-party
Listen up, hobbits. If you’re one of those Trekkie-style “Lord of the Rings” fanatics then you’ve found your ultimate Oscar party. The annual One Expected Party is taking place at the Hollywood American Legion hall just blocks from where the actual awards show is taking place. Celebrate alongside your closest Tolkien friends and get ready for almost 10 hours (!) of entertainment and fellowship.  Aside from watching the Academy Awards, the festivities include a full bar, afternoon tea finger food buffet (3:30pm-5:30pm), Hobbit Feast Dinner buffet (8:30pm-10:30pm), auctions, games, roving entertainers and live performances by several acts including Billy Boyd (aka Pippin) and his band Beecake. Ah, the precioussssss…

Mar’sel @ Terranea Resortwww.terranea.com
This seaside getaway is saluting Oscar night with a viewing party and special menu inspired by this year’s nominees. There’ll be dishes like “Zero Dark Chocolate” and the Django Unchained-inspired “Bounty Hunter Lamb Rack” as well as Oscar-themed cocktails including the “007 Vesper’s Martini.” The viewing party begins at 4pm with the awards ceremony starting at 5pm. For added fun, guests will be given an Oscar ballot to fill out upon arrival. The person who gets the most correct winners on their ballot will receive a dinner for two valued at $250. Reservations are required, so call 310.265-2836 to book.

Kimera Restaurant Irvinewww.kimerarestaurant.com
The glitz and glamour of Hollywood is heading to the OC for Kimera’s 5th Annual Oscar Party benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association. Starting at 4pm you can live out your fantasy of being a celeb by walking the red carpet, stopping for an interview or two and getting your photo taken. The red carpet will lead to a reception in the lounge featuring four big screen TVs and tray-passed hors d’oeuvres before moving into the main dining area at 6pm for an elegant buffet dinner and viewing of the awards show. Tickets are $85 and include hors d’oeuvres, cocktail and dinner buffet. VIP booths are available for $100 per person and include a bottle of Champagne for the table. To RSVP or for more info call 949.261.1222 or email rsvp@kimerarestaurant.com.

W Los Angeles–Westwoodwww.wlosangeles.com
If you like to keep things low-key, you might enjoy checking out Whiskey Blue at the W Hotel in Westwood on Oscar Sunday. There’s no official viewing party here, but they will be showing the awards show on all of the TVs in Whiskey Blue and serving up cool Oscar-inspired cocktails like the Silverlining, Les Mis, Mi Amour and Django’s Girl. So grab your friends, order a cocktail (or two) and create your own viewing party.

There’s another Oscars viewing party hosted by a non-profit organization I volunteer for. It’s at the Universal backlot with catering by Wolfgang Puck.

I wonder if any of these places will be serving horse meat in honor of War Horse.
