Taking it to the Streets: Lab Art in LA
LA’s art scene is hot! And it’s not even summer yet. NYC gallery owner Jeffrey Deitch relocated here to become director of MOCA, Renzo Piano’s recent LACMA expansion opened to much fanfare, and Eli Broad is planning a contemporary art museum downtown. Now we can add LAB ART to the mix, the country’s largest gallery dedicated to street art.
Opened to the public on Friday, May 13, the 6,500-square-foot exhibition space brings together approximately 300 works by over 30 street artists including lots of celebrity favorites like Alec Monopoly, famous for his paradoxical spin of the Monopoly man from the iconic board game; Thank You X, known for his images of Andy Warhol; and Sean D’Anconia, whose virtual universe called “Majestyland” is the setting for his faux films and advertisements.
Other highlights include “Ice Cream Drop” by Desire Obtain Cherish (pictured) and the gallery bar‐top painted by urban muralist Gregory Siff who’s known for his 6th Street Mural at The Standard Downtown, and a life‐size cow statue titled “Cheshire Cow,” which was created by artist Rabi and inspired by the Cheshire Cat from “Alice in Wonderland.”
Seems the so-called culture-less landscape of LA is looking mighty artful these days.
