Spending Holidays Without Family: Why We Love Our New Tradition
When most of us think of the holidays, we think about spending them with family — and that’s exactly what my husband and I did for over 20 years. That usually meant staying in LA, where where my family still lives, or flying out to see his dad in Miami or visiting his mom and sister in Maui.
But things changed in 2020. That’s when both of us went fully remote, so we figured it was time to make the most of our newfound freedom.
Most recently, we enjoyed our first Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Paris, just the two of us. In previous years, we’ve celebrated the holidays in Tucson, Palm Springs, and Mexico. (If you want to know how that last one turned out, be sure to check out my story on the truth about Isla Mujeres).
We make time to see our loved throughout the year and during other special occasions, so we have no qualms about spending holidays without family.
It’s not a tradition we planned on, and we’re always open to changing our mind. But so far, we’re loving the spontaneity of going wherever our mood takes us and not knowing where we’ll be next Christmas.
