Shake, Battle & Rolls: Sumo in So Cal!

Blame it on those vintage Baby Huey cartoons I watched as a kid, but I just can’t help but have an affinity for sumo wrestlers. And if you share my fetish fondness for the ancient Japanese tradition of overgrown men in diaper-like getups wrestling one another, now’s your chance to see all the sweaty larger-than-life action up close and personal when the Origins International 2011 Martial Arts Festival rolls into Anaheim this weekend.

A professional sumo training for all levels takes place on Friday afternoon led by Byamba, three-time World Sumo Champion, who’ll teach the fundamentals of sumo, offer cross-training techniques for other martial arts and provide a deeper understanding of sumo’s 2,000-year tradition. The action culminates on Saturday with a tournament featuring an international lineup of some 20 champions from around the world.

Friday, August 26 (3pm-4:30pm) – Saturday, August 27 (3pm-6pm) @ Anaheim Convention Center, 800 West Katella Ave, Anaheim, CA 92802. Tickets $10 with advance RSVP or $15 at the door.
