A Very Special Thanksgiving

You call this work?! Before I headed out of town to spend the holiday with my own family, I had the chance to spend Thanksgiving morning with a very special family that had just welcomed two beautiful children into their lives.

PJ and Julie Guske are a happily married couple with three children ages 18, 20 and 23. But this year the family has grown to five children – the couple just adopted two-year old African-American twins, one boy (Henry) and one girl (Grace). The Guskes knew it would be a big life change, so they made sure the entire family agreed with the decision.

Throughout the process of fostering and adoption, the family worked with Olive Crest, a national non-profit for abused and neglected children. In addition to there being a shortage of foster families in Los Angeles, there is a disproportionate amount of African American children in foster care.

This November was their first Thanksgiving as an official adoptive family, which happens to be National Adoption Month. Along with traditions they had already established with their grown children (making hand turkeys and baking cookies) the Guskes said this holiday they would be doing something that hopefully won’t become a tradition: painting the house! It was so fun spending time with these adorable kids and getting to know the whole family – lovez!
