Up, Up & Away in Marina Del Rey!

I’m not exactly a water adventure person, but even I couldn’t resist the chance to go parasailing and learn some surf ninja moves in Marina del Rey, LA’s own playground. I couldn’t even remember the last time I was there, but it’s great once you figure out what activities await you for not a lot of money.

Phins Water Sports Club is a really fun spot and sort of like a gym on the water. They have Paddle Board Martial Arts, the only workout of its kind in the entire world. Created and taught by black belt Mike Weaver, the lessons are just $20 a class and I really love how it’s a mind-body exercise that aims to help you reach balance both mentally and physically — everything you’re feeling is intensified on the board, so you better make sure you stay relaxed and focused! There’s also the sculling rowing boat rentals (the same style used by the Olympic rowing teams). These state-of-the-art boats feature sliding seats, which means a major workout that uses all of your major muscle groups with little or no impact. I tried it and really enjoyed it, although I was sore the next day.

On the other side of the marina near Fisherman’s Village is Marina Del Rey Parasailing. OMG it was incredible!!!! The takeoff is so smooth and easy and you feel like you’re gliding on air. It’s so peaceful and beautiful up there. The only time I got a little nervous was when we were still on the boat waiting to go up and the waves got a little choppy. Oh, and when there was a little bit of a dip while we were up in the air. (Which was probably due to the waves down below. Sorta like turbulence but waaaaaaay softer.)

Amazingly, you can enjoy this unforgettable water adventure without ever getting wet. That’s because there is a dry takeoff and landing platform right on the boat. FYI, if you do want to get a little splashy, you can always choose the ‘toe dip’ option where you’re lowered into the water before being reeled all the way back to the boat. The price is $75 per person with other packages available at higher rates.

The best part is, these aren’t just summer activities. Here in LA we can enjoy these adventures seven days a week, all year long!
