Best Oscar Moments of 2012

Another year of Academy Awards has come and gone and even though the whole affair is usually kinda boring and way too long, nobody seems to be able to talk about anything else. At least for the next few days anyway. So I figured I may as well throw in my top 10 favorite moments from the 2012 Oscars. From a few memorable acceptance speeches to an eye-catching leggy gesture (it’s not the one you think), here’s what kept me watching on Hollywood’s biggest night.

Billy Crystal’s opening montage. Minus the singing.
Crystal + Clooney = True Love ForeverI know most people are saying “Hated it!” but I thought the opening montage with Billy Crystal was actually fun and funny. From his kiss with George Clooney to his midnight moment in Paris with Justin Bieber, I thought it was all very well played … until he got to the singing part where I didn’t understand at least half of what he was saying.

Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz’s silly moment together.
Rear view mirror: JLo & DiazNevermind the nip slip. (And no matter what her stylist says, there was total outer nippleage.) When Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz took the stage to do a little rear view presentation for best costume and makeup it was just a fun moment with them being two giggling girls having a good time.

Octavia Spencer’s speech.

Thankfully, Octavia Spencer was not that kind of winner. She had the sort of Oscar acceptance speech you hope for: sincere, spontaneous, expressive.

Christopher Plummer’s acceptance speech.
Christopher Plummer finally gets his“You’re only two years older than me, darling, where have you been all my life?” Yes, Christopher Plummer’s acceptance speech sounded a bit rehearsed but it was smart, funny and thank God he had didn’t pull out a laundry list of names!

Cirque Du Soleil guys in suits.

These sleek, suit-wearing dudes were a little circus, a little Mad Men and a whole lot of cool. So calm and collected as they soared through the air with the greatest of ease.

Robert Downey Jr. and his fake documentary skit.

Chris Rock’s 60 seconds of standup.

What can I say? Chris Rock rocked the Oscars. In 60 seconds. “I love animation because in the world of animation, you can be anything you want to be,” he said. “If you’re a fat woman you can play a skinny princess. If you’re a short wimpy guy, you can play a tall gladiator. If you’re a white man you can play an Arabian prince. And if you’re a black man, you can play a donkey or a zebra.”

Melissa McCarthy’s leg block in Billy Crystal’s dressing room.
Melissa McCarthy is double troubleForget Angelina’s bony long leg. For me it was all about Melissa McCarthy’s hilarious little redux of her leg scene in “Bridesmaids.” Only this time she was able to show off some incredible dexterity. “I gotta introduce you to a friend of mine, I think you’re gonna like her. She’s a lot of fun,” she told Billy. “And I really have to introduce you to her sister.”

Meryl Streep.
