Go Out, Have Fun, Help Japan

By now you’ve probably read about the many restaurants and other businesses around town that are donating to the relief efforts in Japan. But the list keeps growing by the day, with a few updates to fill you in on.  With so many places now on board, there are plenty of ways to go out, have fun, and help Japan. Check out these local restaurants, bars and other places around Los Angeles and Orange County that are doing their part to help the Japanese relief efforts.

Takami Sushi & Robata – 811 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90017
ONGOING DAILY: Located on the penthouse floor of the Wilshire Building, this Japanese restaurant not only has great views overlooking Downtown LA, it also has a remarkable sense of generosity. For all lunch and dinner service, Takami is donating 100% of all profits (yes, as in 100%) to the Red Cross Japanese Relief Fund. There is currently no end date for the promotion.

Koi –  Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas
THUR 3/24-FRI 4/22: In support of those affected by the tragedy in Japan, Koi has debuted two new menu items at all three of its locations (Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas): The Rising Sun Roll (California roll wrapped in soy paper topped with seared tuna and tempura flakes, $18) and the Koi Fusion Shot, a fruit-infused sake cocktail ($4). 50% of the proceeds from these items will go to the American Red Cross Japanese Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami relief efforts through Koi’s charitable foundation, Just a Little, until Earth Day, April 22.

Cube Café – 615 N. La Brea Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90036
TUE 3/22-TUE 3/29: UPDATE! For one week, Cube Cafe is running a “Red for Red” fundraiser, donating 100% of the proceeds from four bottles of wine. And now they’ve added two red-sauce pastas. The handmade pastas include Maltagliati with Oxtail Ragu ($15) and Gnocchi with Lamb Sausage Bolognese ($20), both served with Red Cow Parmesan cheese, naturally. Washing it all down? Three red wines and one white, ranging in price from $10 to $18.

La Seine14 N. La Cienega Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90212
THUR 3/24: This kosher California-French newcomer on Restaurant Row is donating 100% of all sushi bar sales to the American Red Cross from 6pm to close. Chef Alex Reznik (you know him from Season 7 of “Top Chef”) has developed new sushi creations and signature rolls for this special fundraising effort.

Typhoon @ Santa Monica Airport – 3221 Donald Douglas Loop, Santa Monica, CA 90405
SUN 3/27: From 11am-11pm, this hidden yet bustling Thai mainstay is holding a 12-hour “Jazz for Japan” fundraiser with nine different jazz and blues musicians, as well as several 20-piece big bands volunteering their time to raise funds for American Red Cross efforts in Japan. 100% of ticket sales will go to the charity, and specials will include $10 bento boxes and discounts on Typhoon’s signature rum punch.

Haven Gastropub – 190 S. Glassell Street, Orange, CA 92866
MON 3/28: In response to the tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan, this popular gastropub in OC is hosting an all-day fundraising event (11am-2am!) with the owners donating 100% of their profits and the staff volunteering their time and donating gratuities to a relief fund set up through Mercy Corps. “We’re counting on our many supporters to come out and enjoy our full menu knowing that every dollar they spend will help those in need of our help,” says Executive Chef Greg Daniels.

Manuel’s El Tepeyac – 812 N Evergreen Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90033
TUE 3/29: From opening to close (6am-8pm), this famed Mexican joint in Boyle Heights is donating all net proceeds from its sales to UNICEF’s Japan Relief effort. I can’t think of any better time to try that ridiculously huge Hollenbeck burrito featured on “Man Vs. Food.”

La Traviata Restaurant – 301 Cedar Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90802
MONTH OF MARCH: Already made a donation on your phone? Get ready to for a tasty return at this Italian favorite with countless food choices and live opera singers. Those who show they have made a texting donation to the Japanese relief efforts of $10 or more on their phone get $10 off any entree!

The Cellar – 305 N. Harbor Blvd, Fullerton CA 92832
FRI 3/25-SUN 3/27: This underground restaurant in Fullerton is offering a prix-fixe menu for Japanese relief this weekend only when $10 from every $45 four-course dinner will benefit the Red Cross Japanese Relief Fund. Space is limited and reservations are recommended by calling (714) 525-5682.

Fresh East – 8951 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood, CA 90069
MONTH OF MARCH: This fast-casual organic and vegan-friendly restaurant is letting you do the giving and then they’ll match it. Just put what you can in the donation boxes and at the end of the month they’ll double the total amount.
