Look Ma, No Hands! Riding the New Driverless Car

Ready for a driverless car? How about your own personal automated valet that will park itself and pick you up on command?? Well, it’s all happening! The vehicle of the future has arrived and I got a first look (and test ride) at the Nissan 360 Autonomous Drive event in Irvine.

The car’s system detects all moving objects within 30-40 feet, reads street signals and signs (it automatically adjusted from 35 mph to 65 mph during the test course) and not only parks itself, but it actually finds parking spots and will come pick you up at your designated area — it’s like your own personal valet! It also detects any surprise movements and will avoid hitting unexpected pedestrians. (That demo actually kinda scared me when it happened, but evidently it can make such swift decisions without causing an accident.) Nissan says this new “robo car,” which is really just a modified Nissan Leaf (zero emissions), will hit the market in 2020.
