Spelling Bee

Supercali Fragilistic…

…expialidocious! If you can spell that, then you should consider not only seeing, but participating in “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” the Tony Award winning musical that’s now at the esteemed Morgan-Wixson Theater. (It’s where a very young James Dean graced its stage back in 1947.) The musical comedy follows six young people in the throes of puberty, who are overseen by grown-ups who barely managed to escape childhood themselves, and learn that winning isn’t everything and losing doesn’t make you a loser.  At each show, four volunteers are invited on stage to participate in the Bee … can you spell unpredictable?

Fridays & Saturdays @ 8pm, Sundays @ 2pm until April 9th at Morgan-Wixson Theater, 2627 Pico Blvd, Santa Monica, CA 90404. Tickets $23 for adults, $18 for seniors and students.

I saw this show opening weekend and it was hysterical. I thoroughly enjoyed the performances of the cast. It was a simple set, but it’s all about the performances. The songs are fun, the dance numbers made me want to get up and dance along, and the definitions and sentences that the principal gives had me laughing. At intermission, I realized my jaw hurt from laughing non-stop. I had seen a couple shows at this theater before, but this was by far my favorite. Loved it so much that I am taking two friends this weekend and I’m trying to get a group together before they close. Very, very funny show.
