Smokin’ Good Times at Tastemade
Tastemade Studios is a new startup in Santa Monica that hopes to unite foodies through their YouTube channel and cool new app that lets YOU become your own food host. It’s sort of like Vine and Instagram video only better — instead of six seconds, you get one minute and you can choose from a host of filters, fonts and background music to rave about your fave donut spot, cocktail, whatever. The only (major) problem is that it’s just iPhone compatible at the moment, so no dice for my fab Samsung Galaxy S4.
The Tastemade guys recently had a party to launch the app at their cool digs in the space formerly known as Toms Shoes formerly known as MTV. I had a chance to run into some familiar faces like Chef Bruce Kalman (he has a new pickle line – excellent curry cauliflower) and my friends from the fab local blog Lincoln & Rose. I also got some great party ideas thanks to the Patina Restaurant Group who brought in a cute portable candy dispenser. Only instead of dispensing candy, it was PB&J macarons, no quarter required! And then there were the liquid nitro meringues. I’ve had liquid nitrogen edibles before, but never straight from a smoking bowl of meringues. Chef Enrique advised me to choose a small one since the larger ones might FREEZER BURN MY TONGUE (good to know) and when I placed it on my tongue and bit into it, my mouth started to pressurize and smoke like a choo-choo train … or should I say, chew-chew train!
