Getting ready for my test drive in the 2019 Infiniti QX50

Test Drive: Two Days in LA with the 2019 Infiniti QX50

I was recently invited to Infiniti’s Global Media Drive to be among the first to drive the all-new 2019 Infiniti QX50 while having the ultimate LA driving experience. The premium mid-size SUV was making its world debut and I would be among the first fortunate few to get in the driver’s seat. (Yes, being a member of the media has its privileges.)

Needless to say, it was a driving affair to remember. Our home base for two nights was the Kimpton’s chic new La Peer Hotel in West Hollywood right in the middle of the very walkable Melrose Triangle/Design District area. It’s literally a one-minute walk from Gracias Madre or Craig’s and a two-minute walk to Cecconi’s, three prime spots for celebrity spotting.

Unlike the other journalists arriving from around the world, I was simply picked up at home in Santa Monica and driven to the hotel in a 2019 Infiniti QX60, which is a bit bigger than the Qx50. Upon arriving at La Peer, I had some time to spare so I took a few pix. Here’s one of the outdoor bar:

Simple, clean, modern. I love staycations, so it was fun staying in a new hotel just up the road from home. Here’s a photo of my room:

The first evening kicked off on the hotel’s rooftop with a presentation by some of Infiniti’s VIPs who arrived from around the world.

Admittedly, I didn’t know anything about the 2019 Infiniti QX50 before the event, but as soon as I saw it I knew I liked it. And once I got inside one, I loved it. The mid-size SUV is manageable enough for someone of my size but still feels substantial for someone taller than 5’3″. Plus, the interior is so plush and it drives like a dream. (The ProPILOT Assist technologies helped me out on the road a few times.)

After the presentation and initial preview of the Qx50, we were treated to a fabulous dinner at La Peer. For my vegan diet, the hotel’s kitchen prepared an incredible roasted cauliflower dish with pesto sauce.

The next morning began bright and early with a fun yoga session led by celebrity trainer Ashley Borden. Because of the rain, the rooftop was tented.

After breakfast and our workout, it was time to hit the road. I have to say, it was pretty cool having one of these Infiniti QX50’s in the driveway. I chose to test drive the only red one of the bunch!

What a beauty. The 2019 Infiniti QX50 looks good from every angle. And the cream-colored interior with that dynamic Sunstone Red? Yes, please!

It wasn’t long before I took the driver’s seat of the Infiniti QX50 and was ready to take on the wide open road. (Well, at least the congested freeways of LA.)

It was great not only test-driving these luxe SUVs, but it was fun meeting new people. Because it was a global media event, there were journalists from all over the world including my new friend Claire Saade from Beirut. She runs, the largest lifestyle site in Lebanon.

It was a beautiful day navigating the scenic route that Infiniti had prepared for us. After about an hour and a half on the road, it was time for a break and Bose sound demonstration. (The audio is fantastic in the Qx50, by the way.) Here we are pulling up to the charming Stonehaus in Westlake Village:

At  Stonehaus in Westlake Village, the weather had cooled and it even started to sprinkle. Not to worry — it was great to enjoy some hot tea by the fire pit and catch up on emails and texts.

Relaxing and catching up

Soon enough, it was time to get back in the vehicle and head out for another gorgeous drive en route to lunch.

Where was lunch, you ask? Nobu Malibu, of course.

It was a bountiful buffet of fresh fish during our two-hour lunch at Nobu Malibu.

All in all, it was a fantastic experience driving the 2019 Infiniti QX50. While I’m not a car expert, I have done my fair share of automotive writing and the QX50 crossover genuinely ranks high among the vehicles I’ve driven over the years. It’s luxurious, comfortable and the hologram above the dashboard was a cool (and helpful) feature that let me know my speed and mileage.

Also, the co-pilot technology definitely came in handy when I was veering out of my lane at one point. Another thing I appreciate as an eco-conscious consumer: the Infiniti QX50 combines the power of a 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine.
